Veterans who substain an injury while serving in the military are generally entitled to receive compensation for the level of disability that results. The governmental agency overseeing the process of applying for and receiving benefits is the Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”).  Unfortunately, not all veterans who seek compensation for their disabilities have their claims properly handled. Camp Lejeune Veteran Victim of Fatal Cancer Misdiagnosis?

A WFLA-TV report told the story of how the Camp Lejeune water contamination and a kidney cancer misdiagnosis played a part in a veteran losing his life. Reportedly, after noticing blood in his urine, the 32-year veteran of the Navy went to the VA, where he was initially diagnosed with a kidney stone. His doctor placed him on antibiotics to treat the kidney stone. However, blood continued to show up in his urine. Upon returning to the VA, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer. His widow believes that his doctors should have considered cancer as a possibility during his first visit, because her husband was exposed to cancer-causing elements in the past, including Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam and contaminated water while stationed at Camp Lejeune. Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Update: Can Veterans File Claims Yet?

On multiple occasions, we have brought the Camp Lejeune water contamination story to the attention of our readers, both on our blog and via our social media pages. Our latest update of this ongoing story involves veterans finally being allowed to file Camp Lejeune water contamination claims. Per WRAL-TV, as of March 14, veterans who were the victims of water contamination could begin filing compensation claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
