What Happened at Cherry Point Marine Corps Base?
MCAS Cherry Point was commissioned in 1942 to provide services and support for several military groups. The base is in Havelock in southeastern Craven County, North Carolina. The site is an active military installation which covers about 13,164 acres of land.
In 1994, the Navy discovered contamination of the base’s ground and surface water supply, as well as toxic VOCs in its soil and sediment.
